Responsibilities
- Provide input to the longer term scientific vision and planning for NEPTUNE Canada. Develop research themes for consideration by the science community from which science proposals can be developed through open workshops
- Assist in reviewing the progress of existing experiments on NEPTUNE Canada through procedures approved by the Executive Committee.
- Provide science advice and recommendations to NEPTUNE Canada for internal use, for discussions with RCOJAC, ORION and others
- Provide advice and recommendations in developing the “metrics of success” for NEPTUNE Canada.
Membership
- The committee consists of no more than 12 members, with the Associate Director (Science), past co-chief scientists, and an invited observer from NSERC as ex officio, non-voting members. The committee has a Chair and Vice Chair, each with a one-year term of office, renewable once.
- Six members are chosen from among the Principal Investigators involved in existing experiments on NEPTUNE Canada
- Six members will chosen from other communities or organizations, to be made up as follows:
- One each from, and selected by, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Natural Resources Canada and fishing organizations;
- One member designated by OOI
- Two other scientists: one Canadian and one international.
Membership extends for three years, renewable but with the intent to bring new members into the SAC on a regular basis. Efforts will be made to stagger membership turn-over through the first few years to ensure continuity. Subcommittees may be established for specific purposes with the approval of the Executive Committee.
Meetings
Meetings are to be held at least twice per year, if possible in conjunction with a major scientific conference to reduce costs. Communications between meetings will largely be by e-mail and, if required, conference calls. Teleconferences are currently held once a month, with email contact in between.
