Journal of Discoveries (Grade 11)
Author:
Learning Objective(s)
Students must stay updated with current and ongoing research methods and new discoveries.
Introduction
NEPTUNE Canada is an exciting new venture into the sea. Its state-of-the-art network and advanced technologies will help scientists make exciting discoveries. Scientists will also share their discoveries via this website.
Introduce NEPTUNE Canada as a source for updated information on cutting-edge research in ocean science.
Materials
- blank journals
- computer with Internet access
Activity
Give students a new “Journal of discovery”.
- ask students to write in their diary at least once a week to discuss or query new discoveries, theories, technology, species, events or anything that has effected the “normal” values (e.g. climate change and associated temperature variations, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides etc). Time must be put aside in class for students who don’t have internet at home.
- tell students to write questions and query theories. If they don’t understand a theory write it in the diary. What is the meaning of the new discovery/technology/species? How does it benefit society?
- tell students that extra credit will be awarded for pictures, annotated diagrams and tables that analyze “normal” oceanic data (e.g. temperature, current, nutrient level etc)
Extension
Ask students to create a timeline in the back of their diaries which describes the various changes over the year period.
Assessment
- Journals should be handed in every Monday, and returned by Wednesday.
- Answer questions and comment on journal entries every week.
- Do the students demonstrate their understanding by drawing diagrams and creating tables?
- Are journal entries accurate? Well written?
- Do the students draw their own conclusions or interpretations from research they report?
