Oceans 2.0 Updates & Notices
Server Outage
03-May-12
Our Oceans 2.0 data search and analysis software suite is getting upgraded today and will be taken offline for about an hour beginning 13:00 UTC, Pacific Daylight Time. Data acquisition will not be affected during the outage.
New Software Release

The newest release of our web-based software is now available. Some notable improvements include playlists for our SeaTube underwater video viewer, new metadata products, Digital Fishers updates and various updates to Annotation Search, Data Search and Plotting Utility.

Our Oceans 2.0 software suite has now been updated with numerous fixes and new features.
Oceans 2.0 Overview
Our Oceans 2.0 project was conceived in response to a CANARIE call for proposals to create new "Network-enabled Platforms." Three distinct components, underwater camera control, data interoperability, and Web 2.0, comprise this project.
Underwater camera control
This work is being done in collaboration with McGill University's Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology:
- Development of a generic, web-based interface for remote control of underwater cameras
- Application of the generic interface to an underwater HDTV camera
Data Interoperability
Data interoperability will allow VENUS and NEPTUNE Canada to share data between the DMAS and archives of other ocean research projects.
In September 2008, specialists from several leading institutions participated in a workshop to explore a way forward for ocean data interoperability. See the related news story for details on this workshop.
Web 2.0
We will develop a Web 2.0 environment to facilitate scientific discovery and knowledge generation in an environment where multiple, continuous, large data streams will be flowing into our data centre from instruments across the observatory networks.
Our present website serves as an initial starting point for Oceans 2.0. Our intent is to continually develop and expand the site's functionalities as we construct a new web 2.0 environment for ocean science. We hope you will join us on this journey!
Conceptual diagram of the Oceans 2.0 concept, which will integrate functions not normally found in science environments. Notable will be creation of a new web environment within which scientists will be able conduct, discuss, analyze, and assess collaborative virtual experiments through the web.
