Dr. Maia Hoeberechts is a member of the NEPTUNE Canada science team based at the University of Victoria. In her role as Research Theme Integrator for Engineering and Computational Research, she serves as the key liaison for external researchers working with NEPTUNE Canada in the areas of Computer Science and Engineering. Her responsibilities include fostering interdisciplinary projects in academia and industry, supporting graduate student research, and participating in scientific outreach activities. Present research areas include automated detection of events in undersea video, modelling and simulation of undersea networks, acoustic positioning systems, and data visualization.
Before joining NEPTUNE Canada, Maia worked as the project manager on an interdisciplinary research project at the University of Western Ontario to develop and market an emotionally adaptive computer music composition engine. Maia worked in many different capacities at UWO including as a lecturer, lab manager, and research associate. She is passionate about science outreach and has been involved in a variety of outreach programs targeted at researchers, students, children and members of the general public. She helped establish the London, Ontario chapter of the IBM Women in Technology program and served as its leader for 3 years. In 2009, she received the UWO Faculty of Science Outreach and Recruitment Award.
Maia holds a PhD in Computer Science in the area of computability theory and a BSc in Philosophy and Computer Science from the University of Western Ontario. Her doctoral research focused on the interface between theory and practice in computer science.
Maia was very excited to join NEPTUNE Canada as the Research Theme Integrator for Engineering and Computational Research in September 2010, a role in which she combines her enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research, outreach and technological innovation.
