Marjolaine completed her MSc in 2004 and her PhD in 2007 at l’Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris, France. Her thesis focused on biodiversity patterns of macrofauna associated with hydrothermal vents along the East Pacific Rise, and factors that shape them in time and space. Marjolaine used numerous approaches to describe biodiversity and its relationship with the environment, including population biology, traditional techniques in ecology and the use of an innovative device to characterize the physico-chemical environment, as well as the application of molecular tools dedicated to phylogeography and population genetics.
At the University of Victoria's School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, she used ocean observatories for her post-doctoral work, 2009-2010. This research consisted in developing protocols to conduct time series observations using fixed position seafloor cameras. At the VENUS observatory in Saanich Inlet, BC (100m depth) she studied biological rhythms, faunal responses to oxygen depletion and renewal events, and the role of day-night plankton migration rhythms on benthic-pelagic coupling. Her extensive experience with imagery analysis and camera data led to new discoveries relating to ecosystem responses to changes in oxygen concentration.
Marjolaine is particularly interested in the role of the physico-chemical and geophysical environments on the distribution and dynamics of marine populations. She joined NEPTUNE Canada as Research Theme Integrator for deep-sea ecosystems dynamics in September 2010.
